TRANSITION AREA NOTES
__________________________
The race transition area is organized based on your assigned race number. Each bike rack ROW is also marked with a sign to help you find your row as you complete your swim-to-bike and bike-to-run transitions.
Olympic 1.5k | Sprint 300m
The Sprint Distance 300 meter swim will be a one-loop course.
The Olympic Distance will be 1.5 k in the Gulf of Mexico and will be two loops, 750 meters each (going out further than the "tri-it-on" course.)
Both courses will be managed by local water safety groups with ample rescue support and assistance. Should the water not be safe for any reason, race management will change the race from a triathlon to a duathlon with the swim being replaced by a run.
The swim will start and finish on the west side of the Gulf Shores Public Beach, with a short run up the beach to the bike transition area.
The Olympic Distance Race will begin at 7:00 am with the Coastal "Tri-It-On" Race beginning at an estimated 7:50 am. The swim for both distances will be conducted in a time-trial fashion. The Olympic Distance Swim is a two-lap swim, with swimmers completing 750 meters, exiting the water, then re-entering across a timing mat to complete the 2nd loop.
The swim will be conducted in a time-trial fashion. Race numbers are assigned by estimated swim time for all categories. A racer will enter the water approximately every 3 seconds, with relay teams and aquabike starting mixed in with individuals. Course buoys will be identified to all racers.
To assist you in determining your swim time, follow this pace chart provided by US Masters Swimming. Pre-register by the Wednesday night before the race to get a spot in the swim order!!!! All registrants after that time will have the UPPER numbers and starting at the rear.
Should the race be changed to a duathlon due to adverse water conditions, the run start will be conducted also as a time trial start based on race number. The Olympic distance will be a one-mile run and the tri-it-on a half-mile run.
USA Triathlon Wet Suit Rules:
Article 4.4: Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards.

Olympic 40k | Sprint 20k
The "Tri-It-On" course is a 12.4-mile out-and-back course on W. Beach Blvd.
The Olympic Distance course is a two-loop course of the "tri-it-on" course on W. Beach Blvd., taking you along a beautiful section of Gulf Shores beach. See the PDF map for an understanding of the flow for your turnaround to the second loop. There will be course signage and volunteer instruction to assist you on race day.
Plan to carry at least 2 bottles on the Olympic bike course and at least 1 bottle on the "Tri-It-On" bike course. There will not be hydration stations on the bike course.
For both distances, there will be a BIKE MOUNT / DISMOUNT LINE. You will walk your bike from your space on the transition bike rack to the BIKE MOUNT line to begin the bike segment. At the finish of your bike segment, you will DISMOUNT at the same line and walk your bike back to your space on the transition bike rack.

Olympic 6mi | Sprint 2mi
The "Tri-It-On" course is 2 miles out and back on E. Beach Blvd. heading east of The Hangout.
The Olympic Distance course is 6 miles out-and-back course east of The Hangout. You will pass the "tri-it-on" turnaround which is one mile out. Note, the course is 6 miles vs. 6.2 miles.
There will be water and energy drinks approximately every mile on both courses. We must choose hydration station spaces with room for setting up tables and distributing water and energy drinks and at this race that is not always possible at the EXACT mile location.
