TIPS for Beginners

Meet our Sponsors

Note about race shirts: please be aware that we ordered Greenlayer Technical Shirts for this event. If you have raced with us in 2011, you likely received one of these shirts. We have experienced many racers wanting to "Size Up" with this style of shirt, and we of course honor that request when possible. Our goal is for everyone to get a shirt that fits and they will enjoy, promise! Shirts must be ordered several weeks before the event and as such have to guess for the late registrants. The combination of this guessing game and folks wanting to size up inevitably leads to someone not getting the size they want on race morning. If you can come out to packet pick up on Friday night, you have the best bet of getting your best fit. If you come out race morning and do not get the size that works for you, you are welcome to come up to the awards area after the race to see if we have your size available from no-show racers. Thanks for your patience with this!

WHERE IT HAPPENS

Cedars of Lebanon State Park is located approximately 31 miles east of Nashville in Wilson County. It is 6 miles south of I-40 on U.S. Highway 231 (State Route 10). From I-40, take exit number 238, go south on Hwy 231 (State Route 10.) The entrance to the park will be on your left (or on the east side) of Hwy. 231. From the Murfreesboro area, just take Hwy. 231 North to the park. If you are coming from Birmingham or Chattanooga area, you can take the new 840 from I-65 or I-24. 840 is only a couple of miles west I-40 exit 238. OR, for a real short cut....if you are traveling from the Birmingham area or Chattanooga area, or in between...take I-840 from I-65 or I-24, then exit for the Nashville Speedway off of 840. Go to Hwy 231, go north on 231, the park entrance will be on your right within a few miles. This will take at least 10 minutes off of your drive.

SWIM COURSE (300 yards)
(pdf layout of transition and pool and finish area)

The swim is in the 50 yard outdoor pool. This pool has been resurfaced for this year, with new lane lanes, etc... beautiful! You will enter the pool in an "interval start" fashion. Participants line up by race number (beginning with the lowest number to the highest.) Race Numbers are assigned based on your estimated swim time you submitted when you registered. If you would like to start at the back, that is fine. Your racking position in transition is also organized by your race number.

You can choose to line up at the end if you prefer. One person at a time enters the pool and begins swimming when given the start command. Swim down the first lane, touch the wall, go under the lane rope, swim down that lane, and continue the same process until you exit after swimming four lengths for a total of 300 yards. When you exit the pool, volunteers will direct you to the transition area where you will begin your bike segment of the race.

TRANSITION AREA
Your racking position in transition is organized by your race number. There will be a MOUNT/DISMOUNT LINE - no riding in the transition area.

REMOVING BIKE FROM TRANSITION AFTER THE RACE:
We will announce when it is ok for racers to remove their bikes from the transition area. Please be aware that others are still racing when many of you have finished and they need the same courtesy of open lanes in the transition area. We will allow racers to retrieve bikes only when we feel they will not impact the flow of others still racing. Thanks for your patience - enjoy the pool, post-race food, grab a shower - we will get you into transition after your race as soon as we can safely do so.

BIKE COURSE
(pdf of the course)

The bike course is a 16.5 mile loop of rolling, mostly rural roads through farms and open land in Wilson County. Roads have a great surface with a rough area of older road surface as you enter back into the park the last three miles. The edges of the road have some washing and there is significant "bumpiness" in areas of miles 13-1/2 until about 15-1/2. This portion is also very shady which affects visibility. Please note that many, many road bikes have traversed this course over the past few years at this race and for recreational rides (including one of your race directors)- so we are confident it is ok to ride, please just show general caution on this last segment.

There are small bridges at around mile 14 and just after mile 15 that will be covered with carpet. You will be able to ride your bike over these bridges, but we ask that you slow down as you approach. If you are training on the course prior to the race, you can ride over the bridges as they are, but do so with caution. Overall, this is a beautiful, well paved course for over 13 miles - expect a couple of good hills with nice recovery down hills between miles 3 and 5, and again between miles 8 and 10. One final short steep climb at mile 12 will send you into the park for a mostly flat finish.

RUN COURSE
(pdf of the course)

The run course is a 3 mile out-and-back course on the state park roads. Not very hilly for most of the course, mostly flat with some slight inclines and rollers and one short steep hill just before the run turnaround.

There will be two aid stations with water and powerade, one about 1/2 way (0.8 miles) to the turnaround, and one at the turnaround. Water and powerade will also be available as you leave the transition for the start of your run.

TIPS FOR RACING IN HOT CONDITIONS

trisuccessYou will probably need as much as 600-800 mg sodium/hr. You can still be sodium depleted if all you drink is water b/c plain water doesn't replace the sodium that you lose through sweat. The body will cool itself better when it is in electrolyte balance; avoid cramping and heat related illness.

Drink 2 gulps (4 oz) every 15 minutes (you can set a timer on your watch if you forget while cycling).

Carry 2 bottles on the bike - 1 water and 1 sports drink.

On the run: Wear a visor and take 2 cups of water at every aid stations - 1 for your head and 1 to drink. Carry ice in your hands to cool down, tuck ice towel around your neck.

During and after the race: You should eat some ice and try to drink COLD fluids.

Keep positive - Don't say the word "HOT" - remember how cold you were this winter - keep that in the front of your mind (seriously)!!

EVENT TIMING & GETTING RESULTS & PHOTOS
We use electronic timing chips, TriTats Body Tattoos, helmet numbers, bike frame numbers, and bib numbers to insure we keep track of you during the race and provide you accurate results.
